A global race for grain trading power is putting more of the world's vital cereals in the hands of fewer companies, with a string of recent acquisitions raising fears that consumers will pay even more for their food, while farmers are forced to accept lower prices for their produce.
Grain trading heavyweights are trying to grab a larger slice of a booming market as developing economies seek food security. They already account for about 75 percent of the global grain market. There is the possibility of a monopolistic situation.
With food price volatility increasingly coming to the fore, most recently in the wake of drought in the United States and other key producing regions, concern is growing among importers about extra upward pressure on prices.
The United Nations sounded alarm bells on market volatility this summer as corn alone surged around 40 percent in less than a month. Soya beans hit record highs,
while wheat also shot up dramatically, reviving memories of the 2007-2008 food crisis.
Urgent humanitarian solutions need to be implemented especially with great lingering hunger problems in the daily lives of those who are living below the poverty line in the Third World countries now.

Global Warming
Global warming has caused monthly records for heat to increase fivefold in frequency, according to a study by scientists in Germany and Spain, published on Monday.
In parts of Europe, Africa and southern Asia, the frequency of months with record-breaking heat has surged tenfold, it said.
The evidence comes from an analysis of 131 years of monthly temperature data, monitored at 12,000 points around the world, which are stored in a NASA database.

Pastor Charged With Having Sex With Underage Church Member
An assistant pastor of a church was charged this morning with having sex with a 15-year-old student.
The 45-year-old married man, who faces three charges, allegedly had sex with the girl, a church member, at a park near Bartley MRT station between end September and early October 2011.
He is also accused of committing an obscene act with a child by holding onto the girl's hand to rub him. This allegedly took place at the park during the same period.
The third charge is of making the girl perform oral sex on him at the church premises sometime in mid-October 2011.

Property Cooling Measures
New property cooling measures have been announced.
They include size restrictions on executive condominiums, tighter loan-to-valuations and higher buyer stamp duty.
This is the seventh round of cooling measures announced by the Government since 2009.The Government is also implementing a seller's stamp duty on industrial property for the first time to discourage speculative activity in the sector.

Heatwave in Australia
Australia's record-breaking heatwave has sent temperatures soaring, melting road tar and setting off hundreds of wildfires - as well as searing new colours onto weather maps.
The Australian Bureau of Metereology has added dark purple and magenta to its colour-coded weather forecasting map to represent temperatures of 51 to 54 degrees Celsius (123.8 to 129.2 Fahrenheit), officials said.
Temperatures on the map were previously capped at 50 degrees Celsius, represented by the colour black.

Looking for a McDonald's in Australia this month? You may bump into a "Macca's" instead.
The international fast food giant will temporarily change signs at selected stores across the country to "Macca's," the affectionate Australian nickname for the chain, in celebration of Australia Day, which falls on Jan 26 - a move that is its first such globally.
Thirteen stores will change their store signage this week, starting from the state of New South Wales on Tuesday, the company said. The regular signage will return from Feb 4.

Then she had them unfold the paper, smooth it out and look at how scarred and dirty it was. She then told them to tell it that they’re sorry.

Even though they said they were sorry and tried to fix the paper, she pointed out all the scars that they had left behind. And that those scars will never go away no matter how hard they tried to fix them.
This is what happens when a child bullies another child. They may say that they’re sorry but the scars will be there forever.
The looks on the faces of the children in the classroom told her that the message had hit home.
All the bullies in the world should be confined to an isolated,
faraway island without any access to the internet and telephone.
GOOD RIDDANCE!

Some customers of telco SingTel have complained of wrong additional charges in their telephone bills.
One SingTel customer said her husband received more than 10 charges for a premium rate service she did not subscribe to.
Premium rate services are available to all mobile users, and include services like games and quizzes.
Customers have the option of opting—in or opting—out of the charges.

IDA wants telcos to stop charging customers to "unlist" their phone numbers from the directory, saying it is a similar position to that taken by the European Union.
Good bye to all those unsolicited telephone calls, especially when they are directed to our mobile phones while we are abroad.
