Red Packets

Traditional art forms seem to be in vogue this year, where Chinese New Year red packets are concerned. UOB's lace-like red packets are inspired by the art of Chinese paper-cutting.

Said UOB vice-president Jamie Lee: "Singaporeans prefer the traditions of the past brought into the designs of the present. So it made perfect sense to weave the art of paper-cutting into the pattern of our red paper packets."

DBS's red packets feature a boy and girl greeting the new year with auspicious sayings, while POSB's feature mascot Smiley and friends celebrating the festive occasion.

Not to be outdone, OCBC has four different designs in each of its hong bao packets. Hanging off a cherry blossom tree are four items associated with Chinese New Year. They are the pineapple, for wealth and prosperity; jade, for luck; a pouch, which symbolises plentiful wealth; and an oriental fan, to bring good cheer.

MRT Network in 2030

S’pore to have two new MRT lines by 2030

Jurong Region Line (JRL)

20-km Jurong Region Line (JRL) will serve residents of Choa Chu Kang, Boon Lay and the future developments in the Tengah area. It will serve a diverse range of commuters by connecting these areas to main activity nodes in Jurong West including NTU, the Jurong Industrial estate including Jurong Island, and the future Jurong Gateway.
Expected to be completed by 2025, JRL will enhance the intra-connectivity of the Jurong region and connect the region to the existing rail network for faster travel to the rest of the island. Commuters in the north will be also able to enter the Jurong region directly via the JRL, without having to interchange at the heavily-used Jurong East interchange.

Cross Island Line (CRL)

LTA will build a major MRT line, the 50-km Cross Island Line (CRL), which will run across the span of Singapore. Starting from Changi, it will pass through Loyang, Pasir Ris, Hougang, Ang Mo Kio, before reaching Sin Ming. Continuing westwards, it will serve areas such as Bukit Timah, Clementi, West Coast, and terminate at Jurong Industrial Estate.

Targeted to be completed by 2030, it will also provide commuters with another alternative for East-West travel to the current East-West Line.
In addition, it will connect to all the other major lines to serve as a key transfer line, complementing the role currently fulfilled by the orbital Circle Line. Therefore, the CRL will relieve the load on several of our existing lines, bringing greater comfort to all commuters and significantly shorten journey times.

New MRT Lines

Rail network to double to 360 km; 8 in 10 households to be within 10-minute walk of a rail station by 2030.

The Government has announced ambitious plans to expand the rail network by 2030, doubling it from the current 178 km to about 360 km.
The improvements in rail infrastructure will support Singapore's long-term development and ensure that the rail network will have more than the capacity needed to meet the expected increase in public transport ridership in the next two decades.

Grain

A global race for grain trading power is putting more of the world's vital cereals in the hands of fewer companies, with a string of recent acquisitions raising fears that consumers will pay even more for their food, while farmers are forced to accept lower prices for their produce.

Grain trading heavyweights are trying to grab a larger slice of a booming market as developing economies seek food security. They already account for about 75 percent of the global grain market. There is the possibility of a monopolistic situation.

With food price volatility increasingly coming to the fore, most recently in the wake of drought in the United States and other key producing regions, concern is growing among importers about extra upward pressure on prices.

The United Nations sounded alarm bells on market volatility this summer as corn alone surged around 40 percent in less than a month. Soya beans hit record highs,
while wheat also shot up dramatically, reviving memories of the 2007-2008 food crisis.

Urgent humanitarian solutions need to be implemented especially with great lingering hunger problems in the daily lives of those who are living below the poverty line in the Third World countries now.

Global warming has caused monthly records for heat to increase fivefold in frequency, according to a study by scientists in Germany and Spain, published on Monday.
In parts of Europe, Africa and southern Asia, the frequency of months with record-breaking heat has surged tenfold, it said.
The evidence comes from an analysis of 131 years of monthly temperature data, monitored at 12,000 points around the world, which are stored in a NASA database.

Intuition

"The true, still, small voice
comes to you
with words of wisdom,
in the breath of the morning light,
in the quiet glow of the sunset.

Sometimes even
in the beauty of the moon
casting its silvery
goodness upon the earth.

Listen,
that is the sound of your intuition,
always speaking the truth." ~ Cathy Greek

Yes! The true, still, small voice has been proven right many, many times.

Sometimes the revelations have been most startling.
More often than not the intuition is very accurate.
At times it sends a chill down the spine.
This is an involuntary reaction which cannot be controlled.
It is there to guide and warn us.
Be sensitive to the little but real voice in us.
It always speaks the truth.
Nothing but the truth at all times.
